About Levada do Caniçal

The easiest walk Machico publishes, and one of the few on this side of the island where the ground barely moves under you. The channel holds a single contour along the hillside above Caniçal, gaining eleven metres over its whole length, with the water running beside you the entire way and the village spread out below. It starts on the ER 214 just past the mouth of the Caniçal road tunnel and finishes near the cemetery on the ER 109, about four kilometres later. Most people walk it out and back, which is what the three-hour figure on the council's sheet describes. The levada was cut to irrigate the farmland of the parish and still carries water toward Ponta de São Lourenço, entirely in the open, with no tunnel to duck into and nothing underfoot that needs a boot. What it offers instead of drama is a long, uninterrupted view: the vila and its harbour, the flat industrial shelf of the free-trade zone, and beyond them the dry brown spine that runs out to the eastern tip.

Levada do Caniçal (L-CANICALVILA) is widely known as the "Caniçal levada". It is an official round trip route of about 7.6 km in Madeira.

Getting there and back

Starts at ER 214, at the exit of the Caniçal road tunnel. Ends at ER 109, by the Caniçal cemetery. The car park at the start has room for about 4. The car park is about 1.0 km from the start. Out and back is the normal way to walk it, and the council's three hours assumes exactly that. Walking one way only means arranging transport at the far end, which the council itself suggests, because the two ends sit on different roads about two kilometres apart in a straight line.

Coastal walks are often at their best in soft late-afternoon light.
