Walk out onto the Miradouro do Guindaste and there is nothing but ocean under the glass and steel. The viewpoint is signposted off the north coast road between Faial and Santana, with a small parking area at the top. A set of stairs and walkways leads down to the suspended platforms bolted onto the cliff face, so wear proper shoes and take the steps slowly. It is a quick visit, easy to fold into a north-coast drive.

Guindaste is free and open air, no ticket needed. The walkways are steel grating over a big drop, so it is not for anyone uneasy with heights, and it can be windy and slick after rain. Hold children close and mind the steps.
