Caniçal, Madeira: gateway to Ponta de São Lourenço
A viewpoint is only as good as the day you catch it. Cloud, haze or a north swell can turn the best spot on the island into a grey wall. Getting here is easy; timing it is the part worth checking.
Caniçal is the last town at Madeira's eastern tip, just beyond Machico, and the launch point for the island's most striking coastal walk. The green interior gives way here to a dry landscape of ochre and red volcanic rock, and the road runs out at the car park where the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço, PR8, sets off along the bare peninsula.
The town itself was a whaling port until its station closed in 1981, and that history is now told in its Whale Museum, the Museu da Baleia. Today it is a quiet fishing and port town with a working harbour and the island's industrial free-trade zone nearby, more a gateway and a base than a resort.
Getting there and the practical part
Caniçal is about ten minutes east of Machico through the road tunnel, and roughly half an hour from Funchal by car or on the SAM buses. For the São Lourenço peninsula walk, drive on past the town to the trailhead car park at Baía d'Abra, which fills early on clear weekends and in summer. There is no shade on the peninsula, so carry water.
Beyond the São Lourenço walk, the town has the Whale Museum on the harbour and, at Prainha just to the east, one of the few natural sand beaches on Madeira, a small dark-golden cove that gets busy in summer. The Ponta de São Lourenço is exposed and hot, so spring and autumn, or an early start in summer, are kinder than the middle of a July day. It is also one of the windier corners of the island, and strong easterlies can make the cliff sections uncomfortable. The light on the red rock is best early and late. Check the live conditions before setting out: this end of Madeira can be sunny while the west is under cloud, and the wind here matters more than almost anywhere else.

How do I get to the Ponta de São Lourenço trail from Caniçal?

Does Caniçal have a beach?
