About Vereda do Urzal
This point-to-point crossing climbs from Fajã dos Cardos, in the parish of Curral das Freiras, up past Boca das Torrinhas to a high point of 1,450 metres, then drops all the way down to 518 metres at Lombo do Urzal in Boaventura on the north coast, a route once used by residents to move between the two sides of the island on foot. At 10.3 kilometres and around four and a half hours, it's a full day out, taking in views of Pico Ruivo and the Curral das Freiras valley from the high point before crossing UNESCO-listed laurisilva and open heathland on the descent. At Boca das Torrinhas the trail meets PR1.3, the Vereda da Encumeada, so the two can be linked into a longer traverse of the central massif. Go between May and October in stable, dry weather: the exposed high sections turn genuinely dangerous in winter rain and wind.
