The Balcões viewpoint is the big central-mountain panorama you barely have to work for. From Ribeiro Frio you follow the flat Levada dos Balcões, an easy, mostly level path good for families, out to a natural balcony looking deep into the island's highest peaks. On a clear day you can trace the ridgeline toward Pico Ruivo and Pico do Arieiro from the railing.

Getting there and the practical part

The walk (PR11, Vereda dos Balcões) starts in Ribeiro Frio, on the road between Funchal and Santana, where there is roadside parking, cafés, and a trout farm. The levada path is short, shaded, and nearly flat, which makes it one of the most accessible levada walks on the island. Follow the water out to the railed viewpoint and return the same way.

The trail and the viewpoint are free, no ticket needed. It is an out-and-back on a levada, so it is easy underfoot, but the last stretch has a drop on one side, so keep children close at the balcony. Bring a light layer: Ribeiro Frio sits high and can be cool and damp even when the coast is warm.

When to go

Aim for a clear morning before the central peaks disappear into cloud, which they often do by midday.
