Stand at Eira do Serrado and the whole Curral das Freiras valley drops away below you, a ring of green peaks around the hidden village once called the valley of the nuns. It is one of the easiest big views on the island: drive up, walk a few minutes to the railed platform, and the drama is right there. On a clear day it is the postcard shot of interior Madeira.

Getting there and the practical part

Eira do Serrado sits above Curral das Freiras on the road up from Câmara de Lobos, and you can drive almost to the top. There is parking by the pousada, then a short signposted path through the trees to the viewpoint over the valley. From the same spot the old Nuns' path (Vereda do Eira do Serrado) descends steeply into Curral das Freiras if you want to earn the view on the way back.

The viewpoint is free and open air, so no ticket and no fixed hours. The one thing that decides your visit is cloud: the valley fills with mist fast, so treat the drive up as weather-dependent and have a backup if the summits are socked in.

When to go

Early morning is your best window, before the valley clouds up and while the far peaks are still crisp. Yes. The road from Câmara de Lobos climbs almost to the top, with parking by the pousada. From there it is a short, easy walk on a signposted path to the railed viewpoint over Curral das Freiras.

What can you see from Eira do Serrado?

You look straight down into the Curral das Freiras valley, ringed by some of Madeira's tallest interior peaks. The village sits far below in the bowl, which is why it was historically a hidden refuge, known as the valley of the nuns.

Is there a walk from Eira do Serrado to Curral das Freiras?

Yes. The old Nuns' path drops from the viewpoint down into the village. It is steep and one-directional downhill, so many walkers arrange transport back up, or return the way they came.
