An easy loop on the Fanal plateau at about 1,150 m, among centuries-old til trees of the UNESCO-listed laurisilva, some predating the island's discovery. The circuit passes the Lagoa do Fanal, a crater hollow that holds water in winter and usually dries in summer, and open pasture where cattle graze in the fog that rolls over the plateau on most mornings. It starts and ends at the Fanal forestry post, a classified Rest and Quiet Reserve of the Madeira Natural Park. The plateau walk is free; the ticketed PR13 Vereda do Fanal ends here, so book that separately if you continue onto it.
