Câmara de Lobos, Madeira: the fishing town Churchill painted
A viewpoint is only as good as the day you catch it. Cloud, haze or a north swell can turn the best spot on the island into a grey wall. Getting here is easy; timing it is the part worth checking.
Câmara de Lobos is a working fishing town just west of Funchal, built around a natural bay full of brightly painted boats. Zarco named it in the 1420s after the monk seals, the lobos-marinhos, that once bred in the cove. It is still a real harbour rather than a resort, which is much of the appeal: nets on the quay, espada boats coming in, and a knot of bars where poncha, the local sugarcane-and-honey drink, is mixed by hand.
The town also sits at the foot of Cabo Girão, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, so a short visit easily pairs the harbour with the glass skywalk above it. Winston Churchill set up his easel here in 1950, and the spot where he painted the bay is still marked on the seafront.
Getting there and the practical part
Câmara de Lobos is about fifteen minutes west of Funchal by car or a short ride on the frequent Rodoeste buses. The old harbour, the church and the poncha bars are all walkable from the seafront car parks, and the Churchill viewpoint is a couple of minutes along the promenade. The streets behind the front are steep and narrow, so park near the bay rather than driving up into the town.
The seaside promenade, the Passeio Marítimo, is an easy, mostly flat walk along the water and a good first stretch of the legs. For more, Cabo Girão and its skywalk are a few minutes up the hill, and the Levada dos Piornais and the higher trails above the town start from the slopes behind it. The harbour is at its liveliest in the morning when the boats are in, and warm in the late-afternoon light before an early dinner of espada. For the sea cliff and the coastal views go on a clear day: the south coast is generally the drier, sunnier side of the island, but check the live conditions before heading up to Cabo Girão, which can sit in cloud while the bay below is bright.
