The Cristo Rei statue stands on the Cabo do Garajau cliff with its arms open over the sea, the same pose as Rio and Lisbon, and the view from the headland runs the whole south coast. A separate cable car drops from the clifftop to the pebble beach if you want to swim or dive where the statue looks down.

Getting there and the practical part

Cabo do Garajau sits above Caniço, east of Funchal, with parking near the statue at the end of the headland road. You can walk right up to the Cristo Rei base and along the clifftop for the coast views for free. To reach the beach and the reserve at the bottom, take the Garajau cable car or the steep access road down.

The clifftop and the statue are free to visit, open air, no fixed hours. The cable car down to the beach is ticketed and run by a private operator, so check the operator for current fares and running times, especially out of season when the schedule can be shorter. The marine reserve is a popular diving and snorkelling spot.
